Christmas cookies

Yesterday we went to the Science room and made some cookies. We used lots of ingredients and equipment.

First we put the butter into a bowl.

Then we added sugar and took turns beating them together.



Next we sifted the flour, cocoa powder, cinnamon, mixed spice and baking powder into a bowl.

We mixed the butter and the flour together and made little dough balls.
We squashed the dough balls down with our palms and used a cookie cutter to cut out star shapes.

Finally, we iced the cookies and decorated them with dried apricots, walnut pieces, sprinkles and lollies.

They looked so delicious that we wanted to eat them straight away but we decided to wait and share them with our families at our afternoon tea.

Popping popcorn

We put some oil in the frying pan and then dropped some popcorn kernals into the frying pan. We waited and waited for the kernals to heat up then...... POP!

The popcorn kernals hopped and popped and we watched with excitement as the frying pan filled up with delicious looking popcorn. 

 

We made some paper popcorn holders and filled them with the popcorn.

Munch crunch munch. Yum!

Room 12's baking soda and vinegar volcano

The volcano exploded and it shot out red food colouring like a real volcano. I like the volcano because it looked like real lava. - Suryanshu

  What do you think it was that helped turn all the ingredients into bread?

"A hot oven", said Dev.

"Flour", said Bailey and Taleen.

"Water", said Bryson.

"Eggs", said Yamato.  

We investigated 'yeast' which is one of the ingredients used to make bread.

What will happen when we add yeast with warm water and sugar?

 We dissolved some sugar into warm water and then added the yeast. We put a balloon on the top to see if it would fizz like the baking soda and vinegar did.

 We left the bottle in the sun for 40 minutes and came back to observe any changes. 

"The balloon has air in it!"

"The water has gone lumpy like vomit".

"The water looks all dirty".  

Our conclusion is that yeast changes the ingredients and makes them a little bit thicker.

Mixing baking soda and vinegar

Today we investigated mixing baking soda and vinegar together.

 

We used the investigation dog to help us with our thinking.

 

 First we put 1/4 cup of vinegar in the bottle and then put a teaspoon of baking soda in the balloon. After attaching the balloon to the bottle we tipped the baking soda into the water.

 

 

The vinegar and baking soda became fizzy and the balloon.

 

How can we make the balloon blow up even bigger?

 

We changed the experiment and added more vinegar. We observed the same result. We added more baking soda and still got the same result.

The jellybeans have shrunk in size as the water is dissolving them.

 

The mung beans and broad beans have swollen up bigger as they've soaked up the water. The mung bean's green skin has come off and they've both shot out wee root tails

 

We will continue to observe them and record what happens next.
